Historical images and commander records

Commander names follow the historical record at the start of each five-day turn. Photograph dates may differ from command dates. The linked records explain acting appointments, disputed handovers and pooled formations.

Where a commander portrait cannot be verified, the card uses a clearly labelled period unit photograph. These representative photographs show the stated country and type of troops; they do not identify the selected formation or its commander.

Archival photographs retain their individual licences and attribution below. Local previews may be resized; sidebar portraits use a grayscale display crop. Group photographs identify the commander’s position. Home artwork is an original illustration generated for this game.

LII Corps · Corps commander

Eugen Ott · 1942-06-28 to 1943-02-01 (end date exclusive)

· Historical commander for this turn

Eugen Ott (1890–1966), General der Infanterie and LII Corps commander, is distinct from the namesake diplomat Eugen Ott (1889–1977). A reusable portrait of this corps commander has not been verified. The card therefore shows a labelled 1942 German infantry photograph, which does not identify Ott or LII Corps.

Tuapse field group retains survivors for gameplay after Twelfth Army headquarters ceased. Subordination to Eighteenth Army does not establish one commander for this pooled counter. · Pooled formation · Explicit scenario abstraction

If the game retains 12th Army beyond dissolution, use an explicit historical-command-unavailable fallback, not Grechko indefinitely. Acting commander is Alexander Kuzmich Sokolsky (1903–1979), verified in Ministry of Defence biography. The winter scenario calls this Tuapse field group (12th Army survivors), not a surviving Twelfth Army headquarters.

Dated army histories give Melnik 10 October–25 November. Some broad lists insert acting Grigory Kotov during October–November without reliable day boundaries; Generals.dk lists Kotov as deputy. Do not fabricate exact acting dates. · Listed commander; acting command disputed · Published service chronology / secondary reference

Vasily Khomenko · 1942-11-25 to 1943-02-01 (end date exclusive)

25 November agrees with service chronology and detailed army list; broad Wikipedia summary says 21 November. · Historical commander for this turn · Published service chronology / secondary reference

Khryashchev is the supported June–July commander. Exact end of command is disputed; the earlier 2 July cutoff in this research was overly conservative after cross-checking Grechko’s memoir. Petrov’s accession is dated 26 August in Russian State Archive biographical material. Do not extend Petrov back into June. Uses the detailed Melnik/Khomenko sequence while retaining the unresolved acting-command discrepancy.
