Historical images and commander records

Commander names follow the historical record at the start of each five-day turn. Photograph dates may differ from command dates. The linked records explain acting appointments, disputed handovers and pooled formations.

Where a commander portrait cannot be verified, the card uses a clearly labelled period unit photograph. These representative photographs show the stated country and type of troops; they do not identify the selected formation or its commander.

Archival photographs retain their individual licences and attribution below. Local previews may be resized; sidebar portraits use a grayscale display crop. Group photographs identify the commander’s position. Home artwork is an original illustration generated for this game.

Army headquarters reorganized as Tuapse Defense Region; no continuing historical 12th Army command.

Field-remnants and later 58th Army cadre-group counters are scenario abstractions without a verified unified commander.

Historical headquarters lineage: Vasily Khomenko commanded old 24th Army 7–23 August and 58th Army from 1 September. This is background only, not proof he commanded the scenario’s retained field-remnants pool. Separate new24 counter is Dmitry Kozlov, not Khomenko.

Trofim Kolomiets · 1942-09-27 to 1942-10-06 (end date exclusive)

Do not confuse Aleksei Mikhailovich Kuznetsov with Vasily Ivanovich or Fyodor Isidorovich Kuznetsov. Trufanov’s return was 7 October, outside scenario.

47th Army · Army commander

Grigory Kotov · 1942-06-28 to 1942-09-08 (end date exclusive)

Command record uncertain · 1942-09-08 to 1942-09-18 (end date exclusive) · Sources differ for this period

Grechko memoir and Valka place handover on 8 September; detailed army list gives 18 September.

Andrei Grechko · 1942-09-18 to 1942-10-06 (end date exclusive)

If choosing one handover for display, 8 September has memoir support; retain the source discrepancy in a note.

44th Army · Army commander

Andrei Khryashchev · 1942-06-28 to 1942-08-02 (end date exclusive)

June–July identity is supported by army histories; 2 August cutoff follows Zalessky. Grechko memoir still identifies Khryashchev in the early-August defense plan. Biographical lists contain inconsistent termination dates.

Command record uncertain · 1942-08-02 to 1942-08-26 (end date exclusive) · Sources differ for this period

Khryashchev relief dates in sources range from 2 June/July to 2/10 August; Petrov is securely documented from 26 August. No certain single commander is assigned in this handover interval.

Ivan Yefimovich Petrov · 1942-08-26 to 1942-10-06 (end date exclusive)

Khryashchev is the supported June–July commander. Exact end of command is disputed; the earlier 2 July cutoff in this research was overly conservative after cross-checking Grechko’s memoir. Petrov’s accession is dated 26 August in Russian State Archive biographical material. Do not extend Petrov back into June.

Fifth Tank Army was dissolved in mid-July. Thereafter counter is a pool of surviving tank corps, with no single historical commander.

Scenario event uses 17 July; accounts vary 15–19 July. Do not attach Rybalko or Romanenko of the later formation to this pool.

Vasily Chuikov · 1942-09-10 to 1942-10-06 (end date exclusive)

10 September is the formal service-list date; accounts of physical assumption of command say 11 or 12 September.

Kolpakchi also commanded 7th Reserve Army. The 10 July redesignation does not change commander. Army-summary claim that Chuikov commanded from mid-August is erroneous.

5th Reserve Army · Army commander

Vasily Ivanovich Kuznetsov · 1942-06-28 to 1942-10-06 (end date exclusive)

June reserve-army identification is supported by archive-referenced Don1942 narrative; 63rd Army commander from July.

Same person through 5th Reserve → 63rd Army. Generals.dk reserve formation number is inconsistent, so use the archive-referenced source for June.

Mikhail Shumilov · 1942-08-04 to 1942-10-06 (end date exclusive)

Chuikov is documented commanding 1st Reserve Army from May. Russian Wikipedia lists Gordov before 22 July, but this is contradicted by Chuikov service chronology, English army list, and reserve narrative; do not propagate Gordov without stronger evidence.

Antonyuk commanded preceding 3rd Reserve Army from 3 July; source lists sometimes date 60th formation to 10 July rather than scenario’s 7 July.
